The Societal Issue with Job Recruitment Scams

Hello there readers! I am coming to you today with a topic that I find to be absolutely EXCRUCIATING – Job Recruitment Scams! If you’re somebody that has tried to find a job any time within the last 20 years or so, chances are you’ve probably made an account on a website like Indeed.com. However, these public jobs have come with a new risk- fake job ads! Have you ever received a text or email from a supposed recruiter for some high-end job stating that they “found your account and are interested in you!” If so, I hope it was real, however, if you investigated more, chances are the email was from a fake hotmail address, and would ultimately lead you to being involved in a scam in one way or another. This is incredibly unethical, and I find it to be highly problematic. In times of economic strife, where many people are struggling financially and just trying to make a living, these scams prey on vulnerable people, and always do more harm than good. I myself have received many of these messages, and while I’m in a stage of my life where I’m not looking for the kinds of jobs these people are supposedly offering, I still find a big source of frustration with these sorts of messages. I know many people with doctorate degrees that even receive these kinds of messages, nonetheless somebody just trying to put food on the table for their family.

As someone who’s been trained in media literacy since she was in first grade, I typically find it easy to identify these faux offers. Unprofessional looking email accounts with random numbers and letters attached at the end, unprofessional formatting within the email, and sketchy subject lines can usually be tell-tale signs of these scams, but it’s not that easy for everybody! I’m incredibly lucky to have received the education surrounding the internet that I have, but not everyone is that fortunate! Many people in older generations simply weren’t taught how to identify the warning signs of scams and hoaxes, and fall victim to these perpetrators much more often, and I find it to be a real shame!
